Paying Taxes Will Become Easier in November
In November, the Finnish Tax Administration will introduce a new reference number that allows taxpayers to pay almost all taxes with a single number. The change applies to companies and organizations, excluding sole proprietors. The purpose of this reform is to simplify the process of paying taxes and allocating payments to the correct tax types. Payments made using the new reference number will be applied to taxes on their due date. If a company has multiple unpaid taxes, payments will be used to cover them in order of due date, from the oldest to the newest. The change will take effect on November 18, 2025. After that date, the new reference numbers will be automatically updated in MyTax (OmaVero) and on e-invoices sent after that date.
The old reference numbers will remain valid for the time being, but payments made with them will continue to be allocated according to the old practice—primarily to the tax type specified by the reference number. This may cause confusion regarding how payments are allocated between different taxes. The Tax Administration recommends that the new tax reference number be adopted for payments as soon as it becomes available.
Changes will also apply to tax refunds. In the future, the Tax Administration may use tax refunds to pay all of a company’s outstanding taxes, whereas previously refunds were primarily used to pay self-assessed taxes.
The change does not apply to taxes included in payment arrangements, taxes under enforcement, taxes belonging to the special VAT scheme (OSS), inheritance tax, or the one-time excise tax guarantee. Separate payment details will be provided for these taxes.
